Ankle-foot orthoses

Ankle-foot orthoses (AFOs)

An AFO supports your ankle and foot so you can walk more safely and steadily. Maegan makes custom AFOs for adults and children, from light carbon designs to solid and hinged AFOs, and KAFOs when the knee needs support too.

Maegan calls you back personally, usually within one business day.

An AFO can help with

  • Foot drop after stroke, MS, nerve injury or Charcot-Marie-Tooth
  • Cerebral palsy and other conditions that affect a child’s walking
  • Ankle weakness or instability
  • Tripping or catching your toes
  • A knee that gives way or bends back (with a KAFO)

Types of AFO

The design depends on what your ankle and knee need:

  • Solid AFO, for maximum ankle control
  • Hinged (articulated) AFO, which lets the ankle bend in a controlled way
  • Posterior leaf spring, a lighter option for mild foot drop
  • Carbon fibre AFO, thin and springy for active walkers
  • Ground reaction AFO, which helps control a bending knee
  • KAFO (knee-ankle-foot orthosis), when the knee needs support too

How it is made

Maegan assesses how you stand and walk, then takes a 3D scan or a cast of your leg. Your AFO is made to that shape, fitted, adjusted and reviewed once you have worn it for a while. We will also talk about shoes, because the right shoe makes a big difference.

Frequently asked questions

Will an AFO fit in my shoes?+
Most AFOs fit in a supportive shoe with a removable insole. Some people need a shoe that is wider or up to a size larger. We will go through footwear at your assessment.
How long does an AFO last?+
Adult AFOs often last several years with care, depending on how hard they are worked. Children’s AFOs are usually reviewed every 6 to 12 months and replaced as they grow.
Does the NDIS fund AFOs?+
Yes, when it is reasonable and necessary for your goals. We provide the assessment and quote your plan needs. We work with self-managed and plan-managed participants.
